Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Goldbach Bates, age 84, a former resident of Covington and area, who died Tuesday, Nov. 6 (1962) , in the Monterey Hospital, Monterey, Calif., were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 13, at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home here. Mrs. Bates had been hospitalized one week. She was born May 14, 1878 in West Lebanon, the daughter of Chester and Nancy McElhaney Groff. She was first married to John Roy, then to William Goldbach, who preceded her in death July 18, 1944. She was married to William Bates in 1952 and he died Aug. 9, 1962. Mrs. Bates had been a resident of Covington and West Lebanon most of her life. She moved to Monterey, Calif., eight years ago. Survivors include three sons, Omer B. Roy of Long Beach, Calif., Rex Roy of Washington, D. C., and Malcolm Roy of Elkhart; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Eva Byers of West Lafayette and Mrs. Elsa Dazey of East Chicago. She was preceded in death by two brothers. The Rev. E. E. McConnell officiated at the services and Mrs. Kathryn McConnell and Mrs. Maralee Anderson sang. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were: John W. Massey, Courtney Blacketer, Amos Francis, Roy Rogers, Richard Lewsader and Louis Klage.
